“I Will Go”
Yesterday, we took a brief look at Isaac’s backstory with God. Today, let’s get to know Rebekah a bit.
When we first meet Rebekah, she is gracious to Abraham’s servant, unaware that her actions are a direct answer to the prayers he is in the midst of praying for Isaac’s future bride.
“Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
“She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’ So I drank, and she watered the camels also.” (Genesis 24:45-46)
When asked, “Will you go?” she responds, “I will go.” (Genesis 24:57)
When she first glimpses her husband-to-be, he is in communion with God (Genesis 24:63)–perhaps praying for his wife with no clue that he’s about to meet her.
When she’s told that the man she sees in the distance is her fiance, she covers herself with her veil.
Then, Rebekah meets Isaac, who loves her, marries her, and is comforted by her.
I always catch my breath a little, here.
My own grandmother and grandfather married the day after they met. But at least they’d been writing letters back-and-forth between America and Germany. And they’d exchanged photos, grainy as they were!
At this point in the story, I have so much hope for Rebekah! She passes a test she didn’t know she’d be taking and for which she could not have possibly studied: a test of character.
Her actions at the well aren’t a crafted performance meant to impress a recruiter. This is no audition for some fake reality show. She’s simply being herself, and in doing so, she is chosen for a starring role in Isaac’s life and family!
What a beautiful start for these newlyweds. Once again, Isaac’s history with God is repeated: “God Will Provide” and oh, has He ever!
Try This Today:
As you’re working on your “God Will Provide” family time line, look for places where you can add times that He’s asked “Will you go?” and you (or someone else) has responded, “I will go.”
Your Turn!
When has God asked you, “Will you go?” with little time to decide?
I hate to say that I can’t really think of any times! I’m sure I’ve had to make important last-minute decisions, but my pregnant brain isn’t working so great right now. 😉
My husband and I met at a church camp when we were 15 and 16. We wrote back and forth for 3 years but never saw each other. We spent 2 weeks together in December, a weekend in April and a weekend in May together and were married in August. Our parents thought we were crazy. He bought me my diamond in December and we had only spent a couple of days together. But we just KNEW…I never had a doubt that I was doing the right thing.
Until today I had never thought about how our relationship was like Rebekkah and Isaac. We have been married 32 1/2 years….and they said it would never last…lol…
